What is the longest distance between trees you will hang from? I am going to make whoopie slings and maybe UCR's and am wondering just how long to make them. I dont want to make them then wish I had made them longer but also don't want to make them so long that you would never hang from their max range wasting rope.
it is often recommended that you hang your suspension so that it rises at 30 degrees from hammock to tree.
If you do, for every foot of suspension line there is half a foot of elevation gained.
The answer depends then on how high up a tree you can put the tree hugger and toggle, and how high off the ground the suspension line is where it meets the hammock.
Suppose then that the hammock hangs at 2.5' off the ground
and you think you could put in a tree hugger 6.5' off the ground. That's 4' of vertical gain, which at 30 degrees would use 8' of cord.
My cords are typically 8'-10' long; I think I can put in a hugger at 7.5' off the ground.

Where x = the rise of the suspension from the hammock to the tree,
and h = the length of the suspension or the hypoteneus of the triangle.
Sin 30 = x/h
0.5 (h) = x

Trekking poles extend the reach for hinging tree huggers higher in the tree. But I usually stick to 13-16 feet apart. (Outstretched arms and trekking poles gauge my distance very nicely.)Originally Posted by gargoyle

I try to find trees about 15 feet apart. I've gone a bit further but the webbing tends to stretch more and you need to get the webbing up higher on the tree.
I've actually hung from 12'6" to 18'.(simply 'cause that's all that was available) but, yeah about 15-16' apart for me is ideal.

I am real scientific (not). I take 5-6 strides for ideal distance. I am guessing that to be in the 15 foot range. I have 15 feet of 1 inch strapping on each end, seldom use all of it, but I like knowing it is there if I need it. If I go to the whoopie sling method, I would use the toggle method and combine straps and WS. I also have a pair of Dutch Clips I need to incorporate with a little stitching.
