Can an UQ be too warm ??

I am thinking about building a 3.5-4" down UQ and use it for a thru.

I would carry a skeeter beater pro, 10x12 sil tarp, and I will take 2 top quilts if I start way early which will be a 20dF down TQ + a ultra lightweight climasheild topper for warmer weather.

Question is though will the 3.5-4" thick down UQ be too much in the warmers months ??

Also where can I get some Permithrin (SP?)

    Thanks

Just be sure you have an easy method of venting the uq and you should be OK. You'll be very happy about it for the first month, but that is a thick uq for the mid-atlantic states.

Permethrin can be found at a bunch of stores. Here's a link to a list.

You can always vent the underquilt. I've used mine in the mid twenties and up into the sixties and was comfortable on both ends.

You can get Permethrin at REI. They have the soak treatment as well as a spray product.

they can definitely get too warm, i was out with my pea pod a few weeks ago and woke up way too warm, sent the insulated pad flying out the hammock. then i was slightly chilled for a little while but still more comfortable.

as others have said the uq can just be sagged a little more to where more air is between it and the hammock and even to the extent that there is airflow.

I have an under quilt with 4" tall baffles, it's fantastic during the cold months but there's no way I'd want to carry it during the warmer months. I made 2 under quilts and my summer one is much lighter weight (duh!!) than the winter one. Personally, I'd want to be able to maybe mail out my summer quilt to a Post Office (or a drop place along the AT) and then switch out the winter one for the summer one. If you're thinking of making the under quilt then just get extra material and a little more down and make a summer one too.
In answer to your question, I've even found my summer under quilt to be too warm sometimes!!! You have to learn the fine art of "venting"!! When using my winter one, I've found that I usually can get by with attaching the uq and then varying which top quilt I use. I do the same with my summer under quilt and then adjust which top quilt I carry. If I'm still to hot, I then have to adjust the under quilt by venting and or dropping it down away from the bottom of my hammock.

    That makes sense.

What I am doing anyway with a top quilt.
Just dont have any spare 1 oz nylon.

Maybe I will just make a 2.5-3" UQ to match the top 20dF TQ and build a 2nd climasheild UQ.

Same result here. I use the same UQ reguardless of the temp. Just vent it at the warm temps. Add a pad when it gets too cold. It used to be 3.5" thick. Not sure anymore.

Other than having to carry the extra weight and size, a thick underquilt can be vented by loosening up the end channels. On some quilts you can create a gap so large that it's almost like not having a quilt at all. If it's really warm, then don't even hang the UQ.
