If I bought a 20* underquilt, can I adjust it to still remain comfortable at 40-60*?

If I bought a 20* full length underquilt (possibly the Hammock Gear Econo underquilt), could I still remain comfortable using it at 40*-60*? Can you adjust (loosen) the underquilt enough to allow warmer weather usage without developing significant cold spots or drafts? I do sleep a little cold but I cannot afford two underquilts before this summer (I still want to buy a Warbonnet XLC ). I want to start camping as soon as I can this year, but I plan to camp only when it's about 20* or warmer (in Virginia). I do have an insulated (rated 3.5 R) inflatable 25" wide full pad, would I need to switch to that at warmer temps? Would that be enough insulation if the temperature is above 45*-55*?

Oh yea, underneath, you can push it pretty high no worries. In reality higher rated underquilts are mostly just benefiting us gram weanies. It's more worth while to start your top quilt collection first as that's where you are going to want more temp adjustment.

I use my 20* UQ indoors, outdoors from as low as -10c to 20c giver or take till my backside is just to hot. I use the TQ as the equalizer in temp control not the UQ.
The 20*UQ is likely the best first buy after the Hammy.

Yes, an under quilt can be vented by hanging it loosely or even sliding it completely out from under you if full ventilation is needed.

I have a JRB Mount Washington 3 Convertible that when I got it, it was rated to about 10F, and I'm fine to 70F in it. I find it easier to go with a lighter TQ and vent from the top. It's like kicking your covers off in bed. If I still am hot I just push the UQ off of me and let it hang along side of my hammock. It's a good way to cool down, especially when it's hot where I camp it's also buggy and having the bug net zipped up can be stifling. With propper clothing and a themarest pad, I've been comfy to -11F.

I used an HG 20* UQ for a couple of years, from a low of 13* F to a high of 70* F. I never moved it to the side or vented. Think of the UQ as your bed and the TQ as your blanket - did you ever try to vent your bed?

I used the TQ as temperature control - if I got too hot, I'd kick it off. Sometimes I just used a fleece blanket on top.

Only if my air conditioning breaks down! My house is 67-70° no matter the weather outside. Give or take a degree when I leave and my wife probably touches the thermostat.

But there it is, a 12" thick mattress at 70°. No problem.

Hah. I've done 78°F on my mattress!

    EDIT:
I should add that a foam gel mattress topper from Sam's or Costco helps keep the mattress cooler for warmer home temperatures.

In short, even a 0° underquilt can be comfortable at 60° as long as the topquilt can be adjusted.
