I just want something at least the width of the fabric. Maybe just someing 70"x24".

It may not be exactly "square" to the bottom edge of the bolt of fabric, but if the edge is straight and you take your measurements from that edge the rest should be square (in theory). I try and keep it in line with one of the rip stop grids.

The largest cutting mat I have seen in my area is like 2'x2' and they are like $40-50. I would like to find a roll of the self healing cutting mat and line a table top with it.

I wonder....I have a very long contractors bubble level.
If I were to fold the fabric directly in half and then use the level until the bubble was centered then wouldn't that indicate that it is a perfectly straight line?

BTW...I have 2 cutting boards and a roller cutter. I would NEVER imagine trying to use just scissors on some of the projects I have undertaken.
I am thinking this weekend I am going to by some plywood for a workbench in my shop.

seems to me that i've noticed the rip stop grids curving, at least if the fabric's been stretched.
then i was trying to smooth it back out flat, but didn't feel comfortable trusting the grid lines.

if you find a reasonable source, let us know.
i've thought about that same thing along w/ a trusty strait edge (angle iron?) you could make quick work of cutting out a hammock or what ever.

His question was "What is the easiest way they you all have found to get the end square?"
I was saying simply cut along the line that's already built into the fabric to square it up. So, yes, that would be easier than measuring a triangle (or anything else). Anyway that was my non-engineering answer

The easiest way I've found is to just guestimate. Plenty close enough for hammocks, hammock socks, underquilts, etc. Might want more precision for a tarp, but for everything else I just eyeball it. If I'm feeling anal, I'll lay it out on the kitchen floor and line it up with the tiles. Close enough for the projects I've done so far. Cloth carpentry...I'm not making wedding dresses or designing an airplane!

But I REALLY want one of the Walmart cutting tables with the groove in there.

Squaring the ends of fabric is one reason I like the tiled floor in the basement - lay the fabric out on the floor, align one or both edges with a tile line, slide fabric to get fabric end along perpendicular tile line and presto - squared end. Use chalk to mark or just take a snap off blade knife, 8' cutting edge. Press cutting edge firmly on fabric and run new, sharp blade along tile line. Neat, straight square end.
