    what follows in the night?

3:30 AM. Hiking through several streams. It is misty, giving your Tekka headlamp view a closed in foggy feeling as you walk the muddy dark trail, that is closed in by thick Rhododendruns. Suddenly, you hear a sound behind you. You turn and your LED headlamp picks up two big eyes staring at you about 20 feet behind you. The eyes are at least 3 feet from the ground. What do you do?

i would keep my light on the eyes & just quietly observe, & count it a privilege.
in any of the places i hike in the south east US, my 1st guess would be a deer. they can sometimes be pretty curious, especially if they have gotten somewhat used to people.
i think it's highly unlikely that one of our bears would stand & look at you that close unless you were some where like the great smoky mountains where they have learned to associate people w/ the food they carry. and even then it's unlikely to continue to come closer, especially if you make noise. ...tim

Set up my hammock and enjoy the view.

I consider myself a fairly seasoned hiker, but for some reason, I got spooked enough to feel like saying my last prayers. Anyone else been in that kind of situation?

Pull out the Swiss Army Knife and prepare for battle.

This really happened to you? You were hiking at 3 am? What was it?

One other question Crawldaddy: Did you have an extra set of underwear cause I think I may have needed some?

First, I would tell BlackBishop to quit screwin' around, then I would continue on my way, cool and collected.

***Later on down the trail I would pull out the extra pair of clean boxers and slip into them***

When/if I saw BlackBishop the next day I would just laugh it off and tell him "He didn't scare me"

Hey, how did I get pulled into this?!?!?!

And btw, my eyes glow even in the absence of an external light source...
