    unless you don't mind intermittent road walks and reserved camping, there are portions of the Burton section of the buckeye trail that you could make a 2-3 day trip out of. Allegheny National forest in PA is an excellent choice and not super far from Northeast Ohio.

    Might as well head up to Michigan. Manistee River Trail between Red Bridge and Hodenpyl dam is a nice 22 mile loop. It is little hilly, but if you took your time and did it in 3 days it might be okay for the youngsters

    This should probably be in another thread since its somewhat off topic...
    I was up there last summer. We were going to go to KY, but the forecast was t-storms all the way, so we headed north. Beautiful weather. amazing contrast between either side of the river. did 2 short days and a long day. Not much water on the North Country Trail side until you are getting close to the dam and suspension bridge IIRC.

    OP- is it possible that your group was on private land at a camp or preserve?
