What’s the thingie at the head of the WBRR?

Just wondering what’s up with this little guy up by my header bar? My best guess is, it’s made for running the spreader bar thru, like I did in the pic. But if that’s true, why not have one at the foot end as well? I also don’t see the need for the cinch buckle, because a simple loop of shock cord would have worked just the same without the hardware. So I was wondering if I’m missing something here?

It’s to hold up the fabric in that area. Without it if you don’t have the bug net deployed the fabric can sag onto the top of your head.

Some people have removed the plastic thingy and just have the loop.

I do not use this and everything works fine. I can't ever remember to slide the pole through it so I just ignore it.

That thing is probably more useful if you've shortened the head-end bar (by leaving out the short middle piece), since in that case there's more slack in the fabric than if you use all three pieces. As Paul said, if you zip off the bugnet there is more slack in the fabric as well. I almost always use the full-length bar and bug net; sometimes remember to slide it through and sometimes not...

I take advantage of that sagging fabric to use the head end as a pocket. My hat, balaclava, neck gaiter, sunglasses, and headlamp live in there.

Same here but typically it's my pillow.

But you're not making any mods to improve on that use case, now are you? And do you use the “cinch/cord thingie” because it helps? I kinda wish there was a double layer of fabric there to serve as another big pocket, but also to break some more crosswind.

The shock cord on mine started coming apart so I just removed it and replaced it with a loop of 550 cord outer sheath. I added some refelctive cord to make it easier to spot against the brown hammock body. No cordlock but it's sized appropriately for the spreader bar.
