I've also used the Swiss Alpenflage for the past 18 years or so mostly for car camping.

It also covers my pack completely and I can pull my arms in if need be. It's big and heavy - coming in around 33oz. (little over 2 lbs). I recently purchased a Undercover/Poncho from Warbonnet to use with my Ridgerunner. It also can be used for a poncho - a pull over style, and should cover my pack. It's a bit lighter at 7oz, so I'm excited to try it out and hope it keeps me as dry as the swiss one.
Yes, this is the beast I have. Probably part of the problem is I am 62 inches tall. This poncho swallows me. Plus I feel like it is on the heavy side. However for some one taller and able to carry more weight it might be great. Certainly is well made.
