thinking about heading down at the end of march but if anyone could shed some light on expected trail conditions that would be helpful. are the trails typically wet and mushy with a lot of run off or are they dry with just more creek crossings from the run off?

I think we are going to try and make this one. We have been looking to connect with other hangers and this trip might fit into our schedule!

Yep our wet season is January thru May. Trails will be sloppy if there are heavy rains closer to your timeline. Shallow creeks will run heavy and deeper after a large storm, but since the mountainous terrain carries the water off quickly a few days after a bigger storm the streams will normalize. Would not suggest creek-side camping if rain is in the forecast!

Can anyone tell me how this hike is rated? Easy moderate strenuous?

It's gonna take me a bit to get back into the swing of things and I don't want to bite off more than I can chew

If you park at the Pinch-em-tight parking lot on Tunnel Ridge Road, the hike is less than 3 miles and stays on the ridge tops mostly. The last section is on unofficial (read unmarked) trail so get a map or directions for Hanson's Pt. I would rate it as easy, the day hiking from the campsite on the other hand... if it is Rough Trail (#221) will be strenuous. Lots of up and down on 221, the ridges are approx. 400-450ft above the river/creeks. Good cardio though! FYI from the campsite there are multiple spectacular views within several hundred yards if day hiking is not your thing. A link to a map set if you want to buy one is below. Hanson's Pt. is directly South West and across the valley from Half Moon Rock on this online map. If you buy the set it is marked on those maps.

Do you all ever go off the trail across the river to camp?

Since the RRGorge is more popular now than ever, when I go and it's a weekend, I go off trail (unofficial trails) just to avoid the crowds. Not sure exactly what you mean about 'across the river'. Maybe you mean the Clifty Wilderness? If your off trail, you better know what is Daniel Boone Forest/U.S.F.S. land and what is private land, folks down there don't play around with trespassers.

Hansons Point will be a zoo on an April weekend if it is not raining. Please bring an extra trashbag to carry out the crap that other people will leave behind, thanks.
