    Pole Mod on Superfly

I am considering doing this. Anyone done it that can offer advice?
Source for aluminum poles? number of sections? pole length? Pics?
Looking at 2Q's pics for the pockets it seems they are relatively simple.
I'm guessing the pole length would be slightly longer than the tarp width measurement. The number of sections would be subjective based on
desired length of each section. Seems to me that real short sections that could fit in the stuff sack would be nice. Anyway, experiences of others
are invaluable especially if it means avoiding mistakes.

    Thanks, Mark

I started with a wally world replacement tent pole 3/8" since then ive gone smaller to a 1/4" diameter poll/fiberglass 8ft 2 1/2" for my Maccat Deluxe. I believe 2Q is using a pre bent alum pole from a rain fly.

Simple project took no more than 2hours to complete. Actual sewing took 30mins or less.

The shorter the section of pole the less flex you will get. GL check my gallery for Maccat pics. Grizz also has a thread on the forums for his mod.

Check out Fibraplex.com for poles. They offer suggestions and comments on your other questions. We're looking into making the pockets. Several have inquired about this after they've seen my pole mod. In a week or so we'll have some answers.

Check out QuestOutfitters for pole sections as well - especially if your chin drops when you see the prices at Fibraplex.

I'm sure the pricing difference is really just the materials - aluminum vs. carbon fiber.

I bet a arch at top will do me wonders.

Since I have been using a straight pole, when I pass the pole thru the sew loop at the top of the peak and then attach it to the opposing pocket, I get a little indentation on the ridge where a small amount of water pools. Thanks for the links.

I was thinking the same thing. Both of the links above offer a prebent
piece that might work good at the ridge.
Also, seems I heard someone mention in another thread that Brandon
was adding pole mod pockets to his tarps now. If this is true I sure would like to see a pic.

is there any real difference b/t this pole set up and having tie outs on the sides of the tarp like the big mambajamba?

The purpose of a Pole Mod and Side Panel pulls is the same - to increase the area under your tarp and keep the edges from hitting your hammock, especially in windy conditions.

I have a feeling that the panel pulls would work better for high winds, since they're tied out to stakes or trees. That said, I really like the pole idea.
