    Nervous hang...

The weather is going to be amazing her in N GA this weekend. We are heading up along to Toccoa River to camp and fish. We’ve had a ton of rain lately and there are mostly really tall pines to hang from. I’m a little nervous of the greater chances of one coming down due to softer ground. I really don’t want to take the tent but I’m thinking that maybe a better option. I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has. (Especially if it means I can take my hammock. )

If they are mature pines as in large in girth. I wouldnt think twice about hanging in them. Just make sure they are healthy looking at the top. No widow makers! Go catch some fish!

If a large tree is ready to come down, it won't discriminate.

+1 to that. A tent is not really any better protection from a large tree coming down. If it’s solid your not likely to pull it down by hanging from it. I check all trees I consider hanging from by pushing and pulling on them along with a visual inspection of limbs for anything that looks dead.

You may want to keep an eye on the weather as we are supposed to have sever weather through here on Saturday night into Sunday morning. So it will be in your area by mid morning on Sunday.

That's a good point. A big limb can also kill ya, and sometimes otherwise healthy-looking trees can have them, usually bigger, older trees.

We’ve been watching that. We changed our plans to do a quick kayak over nighter. Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I sure could pack easier if we took the hammocks. I didn’t realize how space sleeping pads and a 3 man tent take up. I think we will take the hammocks since we changed locations.

I personally like younger, small tree groves. Wind swept tree line areas are free and clear of widow makers. They are also not as tall and more stout.
