    Hammock friendly parks

I've been happily sorting out the backpacking schedule for the year with my buddies. Our inaugural outing will be in March, to a large state park (Henry Coe) on the coast - the "real" mountains will be snowbound until May at the earliest.

I called to talk to the staff about routing and trails that might need maintenance - on the coast a single storm can make a trail impassable - and he was painstakingly going over my route, explaining where there were not so many flat places and I said I had a hammock and so did a couple others - "Oh, you're all set then."

A much nicer response than "you have a what?"

I think he was a volunteer, actually. The state parks have a lot of those.

It's interesting that I've been rambling around with the hammock and get the least shock and awe response from some of the smaller places. The national park staff patroling campgrounds give me the eyebrow and the skeptical "that's not a designated tent spot!" (I'm always tempted to ask him to move the trees into the tent spot for me then.)
