    Kayak camping

We’ve decided to do some kayak camping trips this summer, instead of our 1 long family beach trip. Looking for kayak camping trips around the southeast. Will have kids along so can’t do any major white water. Thank you!!

Summer kayaking on flat water in the SE might get a little hot and buggy.

That said my wife and I are planning a trip to the Okefenokee swamp in April, there are over a hundred miles of canoe/kayak trails to explore there. We're planning a three day/two night excursion out into the swamp beginning at Stephen C Foster State Park.

It'll be the first time I ever canoe camped, wish me luck!

    Good luck John!

We love canoe camping, its really what got us into hammocks. Make sure all gear is secure and dry bags are a must, especially in kayaks. They call it WATER sports for a reason lol. Make sure to take lots of pictures and share them mfox, I can't wait to hear about your adventures!

Check out the springs in middle florida. Then you can take a swim in the cool clear water when you get a little over heated. We went on Rainbow River recently. Check out the trip report.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

Good luck. I’ve paddled the Suwannee River from Stephen Foster to Dowling Park with the Boy Scouts. It’s a little over 50 mile run and we did it in 4 days, plus 1 day for a service project. Stayed on sand bars and at FDEP river camps along the way.

With sea kayaking especially: There's waterproof and then there's kayak-waterproof. We used to buy 'waterproof' radios from WestMarine, pay an extra $30 for 'coverage' and in 9 months to a year, we bring back the corroded mess; they give us a new one, we'd pay the extra $30..... and then they started making radios that were kayak waterproof. Flotation bags are usually also dry bags. So even if you have sealed hatches, add the extra safety factor, plus the dry storage.

An interesting tip from a Scottish kayaking guide: Bring one of those monster sized Ikea bags, they weigh only 4 ounces. Then when you land your kayak and start pulling gear out of the hatches, you put it into the Ikea bag, it's off the sand or mud, in one place, but not so tightly jammed together you can't easily sort through it. Having backpacked traveled and hiked, the first couple of weeks you're always tearing everything apart looking for something... after that (for me it's a month) you know where everything is. So for those early weeks of confusion, the Ikea bag would really help. After you get your chops: pass it on to someone else.

Depends on what you're after, of course, but one my wife and I have done not far from you was Lake Santeetlah, a mountain lake. We enjoyed it.

Where in the southeast are you looking. Plenty of places in NC. Take a short trip to Bear Island and camp out on the beach. The Neuse River, trent river among many others.

You also have black creek in Mississippi. Several trip options and shuttles are available.
