    Full pertex UQ

Thought I's post some pics of the next creation

This UQ has just been sewn up and is ready to be filled with down. It's made from blue ripstop pertex and 100% polyester super strong blue gutterman thread. The pertex is a little bit heavier than the microlight I have used in the past but has a really soft feel and good drape. Pack size is also pretty good. The thread has turned out to be a pretty good match in terms of its colour.

The UQ is larger than my standard 3/4 UQ, those have been around the 120cm mark.

A smidge over 4ft wide with seven baffles.

Thanks for posting. I have some Pertex microlight that'll be used for insulated hammocks, but I'm considering an underquilt, too. How did you orient the pertex for the two layers? Did you keep the calendered (shiny) side up (i. e. facing the hammock) for both surfaces. I think the microlight passes moisture better from calendered to non-calendered side, but I don't know if that's true of all Pertex fabrics. Let us know how much down you use and how your suspension system works. Stay warm!

Looks great! Where did you buy the Pertex? I'm interested in taking a closer look at the fabric but I'm having a hard time finding a supplier...

Although not really easy to get pertex can be found here in the UK. This lot is from an ebay seller that is mentioned in the pertex fabric threads.

Normal non ripstop pertex 4, 5 and 6 is widely available over here but isn't cheap.

Beautiful! With stitches that straight you could have used contrasting thread.
Any info on the fabric orientation?

Calendered on the inside for both pieces.

Sewing straight on ripstop is easy!

"Inside" = side facing the down
    or
"Inside" = side facing the hammock?

I suspect it's the former, as calendering is said to make the fabric more down-proof, but just wanted to be sure. If moisture passes from calendered to non-calendered side better, wouldn't the second choice allow moisture generated in the hammock to pass through the UQ quicker? Where is a physicist when you need one? I doubt that there's a "momentous" difference , but curiosity ...

... Wait! If moisture vapor passes from the hammock into the quilt and then condenses as it reaches the outer shell, where capillary action conducts it to the outside ....
