    Coleman Tarp

I was looking over the Coleman website and ran across this Sun Shade Tarp. It comes with poles and stakes but it could be setup between trees without the poles. I sent an email to their customer service asking the actual dimensions of the tarp and also if they had the weight of just the tarp. Price I have seen range from $50.00 down to $30.00. I thought this might be an inexpensive option for a tarp if the weight is not too much. It also appears to have cat cut sides.

Has anyone seen or used this tarp before.

    Thanks,
    Chris

The specs on that Amazon page list it at 6.1 pounds!

Of course that weight probably includes the poles.

I did notice the weight on the Amazon site. The specs say it has 2 - 90" steel poles. I am thinking this is where most of the weight is. The stakes are also probably steel. If I get a response from Coleman on the actual tarp weight I will let everyone know.

Also, it is a "sun shade", says nothing about being water proof.

I have one, but don't use it on my hammock.

I had the same thought you did, but I already had it for family car camping. It will give you good coverage over a hammock and it does shed water well, but even without the poles and replacing the guy ropes it is heavy and bulky. Not a good choice for hiking. With the weight and bulk you aren't getting a deal. For the same/better coverage and price a cheap tarp would work better. For a few bucks more you can get a much better light weight waterproof tarp, which would serve you better.

You definitely want the waterproof feature in your hammock tarp. This will likely shed most water, as already mentioned - but beware the serious monsoon storm... I wouldn't trust it.

Thanks everyone for you replies. It is nice to be a part of a community that is so helpful and full of knowledge. I have been looking to replace my stock Hennessy tarp but I always read post here to get advice because usually someone has already used or experienced what I am looking at. The stock tarp has served me well so far, even in some pretty hard down pours, but I would like a little more coverage so I am not stuck in the hammock.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

There was a post about a Chinook Tarp a while back that got some pretty good feedback - do a forum search for Chinook. I think someone got a 14x12 (HUGE!), but they have smaller sizes as well. Very low price and I think more suited for packing - not ultralight, but certainly better than this Coleman.

here's the thread on the chinook tarp: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...hlight=chinook

i've used it a few time and no complaints thus far. The grommets on the ridgeline tieout are a turn off for most but I haven't had an issue yet. I'm also using one of opies tarp ridgelines which puts a little less strain on the grommets. here are some pics of it in use: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=14565
