Yes, there is confusion in this! I just looked at how I sleep in my regular bed. I'm a side sleeper and tend to lay on my left side.... So this makes me a right lay..... Perfectly clear right?

In Theater, Stage Right and Stage left again is confused by who's right and Who's left, the actor or the audience? When I took drama in high school this changed depending on who you were talking to.

I'm interested if someone can think of a dead easy way to describe this so a newbie making a first purchase can clearly understand the difference.

    good Luck!

As a newbie myself, I found it easiest to read 'Left lay' or 'Right lay' as, "If laying in the hammock on your back, which side of center are your feet?" This is how warbonnet and dream hammock identify so I figured they were setting an ambiguous standard. By simply thinking this when researching different hammock builds, the terminology just comes as second nature to me now.

Well, according to all the comments here, there is in fact a right lay and it appears to hang out opposite the left lay. And the way I see it, there is also a wrong lay and that is on the ground.

In polite society, we have somehow come to a consensus that a particular "side" of an individual is determined from the point of view of that individual, i.e. that person's brain looks out from its eyes and down to its right hand which is attached to the right side of its body and is located on the same side of the body as the right foot and right leg. So, too, in hammock society (usually polite), the "lay" of an individual has reached a consensus state such that the person's brain spatially determines the lay from a supine position - head and torso facing up. If both feet are positioned to the right of "body center" and the head is positioned to the left of "body center", we call that a "right" lay. There is nothing left to say, right?

This thread reminds me of something I first saw many years ago and still has meaning in today's world.

After reading most of this thread I have found that the easiest way for me to remember this is which foot is near the edge of the hammock (in danger of falling out of the hammock) when sleeping on my back. I sleep with my right foot closest to the edge.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

I'm not sure what's right. I sleep with my feet to the right. I sleep all right. There's a wall to my right. My ridgeline light's on my right. Am I wrong?
