I went with the small tarp 3x3m. I found the wind really knocks the big tarps around to much with out the tieouts in the middle that pull the tarp away from you in the wind. The small tarp cuts through the wind a bit better and you can still cook under or near your hammock. But not much room as the bigger tarp. if the weather really blows in I have a smaller 3x2 tarp that goes over the hammock to enclose me in or string it up over the main tarp for more shelter. I nearly got to use it at Washpool NP in OZ but the rain went away woot woot.

Right now my go-to tarps are the MacCat Standard in summer and the JRB 11x10 in winter. Very happy with both but plan to move to Spinn or Cuben pretty soon.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
My go-to tarp is my JRB 8x8... I've made another bigger tarp that pitches tighter and has way more coverage, but love that two-stake easy set up and it sure is easy to carry.
But then again, short people get to get away with little tarps.
