DIY tiny ad hoc tarp for bridge?

I'm fancying a tiny tarp the size of the hammock + skirt falling on the sides one could mount in the middle of the night in case the weather should turn foul, on some small removable masts installed ad hoc on the spreader bars. This plus the end tips of the spreader bars nesting inside some grommets should allow a taut shape.
No need to attach it to trees or to stakes, it would be all self contained.
It would still breath a little on the sides.

Did anyone already think of something like that ?

I didn't know this hammock. Yes, that is kind of the idea. But I wouldn't want to carry a 4 lb hammock. I am thinking of something very light to add occasionally, in case you skip the tarp and there are some drops during the night.

After I finished my new bridge, I had a similar thought. If you do go forward, I'd love to see some pics, or even a tutorial.

I started with one of those Lawson hammocks.
Always got wet getting in and out of my Lawson in the rain in such a small tarp.
In my opinion it would be easier to just rig a simple small but long enough tarp over the bridge.
    Warbonnet Mini-Fly is super simple.

I know we're all trying to save weight but this seems like going too far. It sounds like it would only work if you set up and climbed into the hammock before it started raining and never came out until the rain was over -- no pee breaks and constraints based on the length of rain. Also, not convenient place to put pack, shoes, etc unless covered by a separate rain cover.

I've used some tarps that are "stupid short" but they work fine for simple rains and cover the hammock by about 6" on the end. They are small and lightweight which is why I like them but sometimes I'll pay the weight penalty to have a tarp I can stand up under and hunker down for a blowing storm.

Still, we're all interested to see if you can come up with something that works, so good luck.

I'm going on a limb here and guessing the goal is to avoid rain on the hammock during sleep. I got rid of the hex tarp that came with my chameleon for the reasons you mention (too small).

If you can rig a top cover of some sort it should work. Just keeping it off your face thats the problem

    You mean like this?

    20180317_081149.jpg

It's something I whipped up with some scrap .51 cuben I had laying around. Just trying out some thoughts I had.

Head end top corners folded under, and snapped together around dogbones.
Head end outside corners connected to each other with light shock cord.
Foot end has tabs sewn on, with small s biners attached to the dogbones.

Total weight less than 3 ozs.
