Question Hammock stand for a small (8'x9') room?

    Hello everyone,

Summer is fast approaching and I don't want to be in the same position I was in last year; writhing in bed all night long because of the sweltering heat. My only obstacle to replacing my bed is that I live in a very old house, over a century old, in a very small room, and I can't reliably find studs in my room for placing eye(i?) bolts. Since my room is so small and cramped length and width wise, I'm going to have to build a hammock stand and have it run diagonally from corner to corner. I've drawn up a rudimentary schematic on MS paint that I'll share, but I don't have any expertise in carpentry so I don't know if it'll work or not. Also: I'm not opposed to adopting someone else's design for a hammock stand, so long as it's relatively unobtrusive and allows me to get a diagonal lay.

All suggestions, input and critiques are welcome!

    Thank you very much,

    Charles

PS. Someone on this forum, in the introduce yourself sub-forum, recommended I use two 2"x2"s instead of a 4"x4" up top to prevent warping. I drew up this schematic based upon his recommendations, but I may have misinterpreted them and drawn up something totally different! Sorry for that.

PPS. Not sure whether or not it needs to be taken into account, but I'm 5'11" and 150 lbs.

    Just 2 things:
    - you're setting this up inside. Make your supports go as high as possible. You can easily lower your hammock. You can't easily raise the supports

    - Look at how you will be joining the vertical and horizontal planks. Couple nails won't suffice where a good joint with 4" screws will.

Always do stress test before spending the night etc. etc.

Yeah, I'm going to use screws instead of nails because I want to be able to easily disassemble and reassemble it when/if I relocate somewhere else. But when/if I do relocate somewhere else that's going to have a bigger room than I have now, it's going to really look out of place. Which is why I might want to build a collapsible hammock stand instead? Not sure.

Rooms usually have 4 corners so you would only have the centre pole to replace

check out the threads for the "spurtle" stand. i have one set up in my home office and use it daily, and have slept in it a few times. one caveat is that because it's made of metal piping, it does tend to clang when you sway side to side, or front to back.

there's also the basic bipod style, but that may take up a little more room:

and don't forget the hang calculator, it's a great tool to figure out how tall or long you need your stand pieces:

Thanks for the suggestions, novasquid. Of the three hammock stands that you suggested, I'm most interested in the last one. In the first page of the thread, the OP shared a picture of it collapsed and against the wall. That'd be perfect for me. The poles would be easy to find locally, but the attachments from tarps.com might be harder to come by since I live in Canada.

If you have use of the full diagonal (12', right?), would a DIY tensahedron work? Very long but interesting thread following its evolution.

Ninety Degree Hammock, e.g. Hammocktent Alpha, Beta, Gamma, or Gamma UL; Exped Ergo; or Amok Draumr. Not only will they fit across the room but they are the most comfortable.

Watched two videos on the tensahedron hammock stand, and skimmed through the thread about it here. Do you know where I can find the instructions on how to build it? And yes, I have use of the full diagonal of my room - 12'.

    Thank you,

    Charles
