    Double Sided Locked Brummel

Well, after receiving my new lines from AHE (thanks Paul!), I decided to plow thru all the posts regarding ridgelines, whoopies and locked brummels. I watched all the videos and studied all the pictures I could find. One thing I did not see was a section of line with a locked brummel on both ends. I took it upon myself to at least try it.
A little back ground first----I have a HH explorer Asym. I dont like the stock ropes and decided on SMC rings and straps. OK--whoopies are light weight, simple and strong. I got out the 1/8 amsteel and started to make a whoopie. Not enough length! OK---Just replace the stock lines with the 1/8 amsteel with a prussik for the SMC's. I should have followed every ones advice and used the 7/64.
I took 5 ft sections (1/8) and made a locked brummel with a 4" loop and a 6" loop on each end. It was a stretch to make the second loop and the first one was'nt very well done. The second one was easier and looked much like all the pictures here on the forums. I said OK! Hooked everything up and will try it out tomorrow.
Now I should have asked first----Is there any reason not to make a double ended locked brummel? I made it a bit long but its very workable as far as I can tell.
Any advice is appreciated from those in the know.

As a side note, I made an adjustable ridgeline out of the 1.75 zing-it I received. That part was very easy to make. I pulled the stock ridgeline and strung it up side by side with the zing-it --- made a locked loop and a whoopie on the other end. EASY!

Here's some fast pics so everyone can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks go out to Ken for his nifty video on changing the HH line for a whoopie. Thanks also to Grizz and Opie for all their instructions and photo's/videos. Thanks also to everyone else who gives advice.

I'm done now so good night!

I do it all the time with my guy lines and tarp ridgelines.

I also have to do it when I make UCR's.

I think carrying a length of line as extra with fixed eye on either end is indispensable. Most carry extra line anyway.... But I guess its not that difficult to make a loop on the end using a knot.

Hey Opie, would you be interested in doing one of your how to pictorals on this?
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

Hi Opie, thanks for the response. I thought it was made/used for something. 1/8 is definitely too large a line for something this short. I'll leave it for now but will probably make another that's 10" shorter from 7/64. I'm sure the 1/8 is over the top strength wise.
jeffjenn---Opie all ready has the instructions http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=13328. Just make the loop on one end and when you make the other loop (which is the standing end from the first loop) just pull the first loop thru -- takes some doing as your pulling a double thickness.
I'm sure Opie or someone else can explain it better than me----I'm quite new to this splicing stuff and am limited on the terminology-but it is a fun learning experience

Here's a how-to on doing this when you can't get the standing end to pass through the other end

    and Grizz's further clarification

Cute cats, and as we do to, cat covers on the furniture

The locked brummels work very well in that application

Yes, their my "helpers" whenever anything with a string comes out. They can also sew better than me too

Hey Opie, thanks for the pics--thats exactly what I did to make my double side brummels. Yours are much neater looking though. I made some up with the 7/64 and it was much easier this time. Your right in that they made a fine spare rope to carry.

When the whoopie was first introduced there was a lot of discussion about the locked brummel vs the straight bury with lock stitching in regards to derating the line. Was this cleared up and I missed it somewhere? I thought the locked brummel derated the line significantly ( close to half ) and this was the reason that Samson had the whoopie sling rated so low in line strength. Again I might have just missed it somewhere since innovations happen here so rapidly.
