    Help! Loopy Brummel!

    Hi Folks,

I've just made my first Whoopie Sling, after following the excellent instructions on here by Slowbro and Opie .

However, the rope I used (3mm Spectwelve) has a blue fleck running through it, woven next to the dyneema strands. I've found that when I push on the rope to open it up for splicing, these coloured strands make a right mess:

I don't think it'll affect the strength much, as the coloured strands seem to be made of different material (non-dyneema), and I think are mainly for decoration. However, it does look absolutely terrible!!

Any ideas what i did wrong?

    Cheers!

    Blutack.

P.S. If the answer is "You used the wrong rope", does anybody know where I can get Amsteel Blue from in the UK?

Wow... That looks interesting. Is that hollow core?

Yes, it's pretty standard stuff, except for the coloured strands. Here's another photo I took of some thicker stuff (not exactly the same, but very similar), which gives you an idea of what it looks like normally:

It's wierd really, as this stuff is specifically sold as high end dinghy sailing rope, and particularly for splicing.

The Whoopie Sling constricts and locks absolutely fine - it just looks terrible!!

Maybe you could run a lighter or candle along it real quickly to singe the loose fibers back into the braid? Just make sure you do it really lightly to keep from burning the actual braid.

Just messin'. How are you performing the bury? Are you using wire, or a darning needle, or something else? Could it be snagging the strands enough to do that?

I'd contact the people who sold it to you if they have the same problem splicing it.

    Hiya,

I was using copper wire for the bury, but I don't think it was snagging or anything. Basically when you push on the rope to make it open up (chinese finger puzzle etc), the blue stuff pops out of the braid. Then when you pull tension back in, the dyneema regains its shape, but the blue stuff stays all loopy!

I did think of burning off the fuzzy bits, but I don't want to damage the Dyneema. Maybe I'll sit around the campfire one evening with a needle and just pull all the blue strands out!!

I'll drop the sellers a line to see if they have any ideas.

You might be able to pull the blue out too.

Careful snips here and there and simply remove it.
