For a little bit of a different idea, I've been hammock camping at Marble Creek Campground. It's not a hike in. They have nice little campsites that you can park at, car or motorcycle. I like camping on the creek side, then setting my hammock up in the trees and rocks just off the creek. It's beautiful, you can hear the water burbling all night long. But since it's US Forest, RV's can run generators all night when it's hot. That really ruins it for me if I can't get a spot down by the creek. It's also at a trail head for the Ozark trail, so I "think" you can hike down the creek area and find camping off trail if that's what you're looking for. Just my 2 cents worth. Welcome to Missouri!

I hope someone does get the ball rolling on a group trip! My daughter (and the dog) and I really enjoyed the Bell Mountain hang in January!

I've camped at Marble Creek campground a couple of times. Nice campground! The Marble Creek section of the OT goes from there to Crane Lake - about 8 miles one way.

Charlie S - I'm guessing that you weren't hanging at a campsite when you were by the creek as in the pictures.

Same for me what Old4hats and ricky said. A fine couple you are going meet. Great with the vittles and will pretty much do anything for ya! I'm a better man for meeting them!
Have fun in the Show me State! Y'all need to come back down and visit Fla again!

My bike or my car are parked at the campsite, fire in the fire pit, cooking gear, water and stuff on the picnic table, then my hammock is set up in the trees and rocks just off the creek. The only time I was there that wasn't so great was last year on Memorial Day weekend, and it was pretty full. I couldn't get a campsite with access to the creek, and the RV's and their generators were running all night long. If I was down by the creek, the water would have drowned out the sound of their generators. It's a beautiful campsite that works well for me. I can't really hike much with my feet. Hawn State Park would be a real challenge for me, not that I'd be unwilling to try.

2 MRS SIPPY riverside spots: Ted Shanks conservation area 15 miles south of Hannibal. Free! If the river is down. It gets underwater easily. Another is 76 Conservation area On the riverbank East of Perryville, about 80 miles south of St Louie. Also free. Live entertainment watching the commercial barge traffic. both usually have few others for company.

I used to duck hunt up at Ted Shanks. Deer are all over the place. Used to like to watch them dance around and play in the flooded fields when the duck hunting was slow.

Any time BUT duck season! The pre-dawn artillery barrage is a rude alarm clock. And being surrounded by unpredictable armed drunks is unsettling as well. Otherwise its a great place to hang. Plenty of trees too. A fellow camper mentioned it is a good place to find Morels in season. Maybe next yr.
