    DIY Underquilt

Hello, my name is Sean. I'm really interested in hammocking, and true to my nature, I'm really interested in a DIY setup. I'm thinking about making a DIY underquilt out of cheap Wal-Mart nylon stuffed with fiberglass home insulation from Home Depot. Weight is not a major concern for me at this point. Does anyone have any input or experience using fiberglass?

First thought is you'd be much better off using cheap poly batting from Jo-Ann's or wherever. I don't know for sure, but I imagine you'd have a hard time keeping the fiberglass from poking through whatever you did the shell out of.

I've thought about this, and I think there's a reason it's not been done.

    Heavy
    Poor loft
    Itchy
... I'm sure others can chime in on more reasons to stay away.

That said - I'd love to hear the reports from someone who's actually done it rather than just thought about it like me! I say - go for it.

I think fiberglass is great for static non-moving situations, like in walls, where it won't get bent very often. The fibers are a glass, so they will break every time it gets compressed. These little fibers that break off are hell on skin. Also the insulation's loft will be reduced with each little break, so the more you use it, the worse it will insulate over time.

I think the batting idea would be much better.

What you could do is make yourself a sleeve for the insulation, and stuff it with whatever, that way if the fiberglass doesn't work out, you can still use the shell for another quilt.

Ask the Depot guys for the MSDS on that particular insulation
    (Material Safety Data Sheet)
they will know what you are asking (or they should!)
and you can make an informed decision.

Cool. Thanks everyone. Based on this information, I'll probably go to plan B: buy a cheap sleeping bad and modify it to be used as an underquilt (I can hopefully make use of the zipper as well).

you can get synthetic insulation used in sleeping bags from several places online. it wouldn't be too expensive either.http://thru-hiker.com/materials/insulation.php

here is a link to one of several places to get some.

+1 on the cheap batting from Jo-Ann. I've used it in both a top quilt and in a Garlington Insulator setup. Works fine, within it's limitations, and it's CHEAP, even moreso if you catch it on sale.

Itchy, that was my first thought. Probably won't compress well and won't loft up after being packed up for a day.
