blah, blah,blah..get a tent and you won't have to put up with that
'Classic.' A book which people praise and don't read.” ― Mark Twain

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.

There are times that the only way you can do something is to do it alone.

It does not matter who you market the stuff too they will use it how they like. High powered fully automatic weapons are not marketed to civilians but they have them anyway

tyvek is not marketed to people for use as ground cloths and tarps but they use it that way people using things in unexpected ways is what hammocking is all about.

It matters because they don't sell trucks to people that are buying bikes.

People that shop at REI, especially in that department, are looking to go to the outdoors, not the backyard. It is the wrong product in the wrong place and offers the wrong impression to the curious consumer. Not saying there isn't a perfectly good use for the product, it just has no business being sold at a place like REI. Just like trucks shouldn't be sold at bicycle shops and bikes at car dealers.

yeah but tents need stakes and that hurts the tree roots which could kill trees and bugs that get in the way.

that last time i went into REI they were selling plenty of stuff that had nothing to do with going outdoors like your thinking. REI= recreational equipment INC so they are selling exactly what they advertise....lol just cause we think of them as a back packing store doesnt make it so

Since I live 250 miles from the nearest REI, I'm boycotting them too! Along with Bass Pro, Cabela's, and Gander Mountain. Except when they have Super Clearances on clothing!

tomsawyer222, you must believe me to be a 'treehugger' and am only upset because they hurt the poor trees. Did your parents not teach you about the word "assumption"? This thread has no opinions from me about the environmental impact of our hobby. My only concern about this product and its usage is how it affects everybody's ability to go out and have this hobby on anything beyond private land. Because when "recreational users" start boring holes in the trees in your State Parks and our National Parks, then don't think for an instant that those 'treehuggers' won't start sending in money to be sure we are not allowed to use evil hammocks in the wilds.

Think what you will about the treehuggers of the world. I have no issue with them, but am not a vocal supporter either. Regardless, the point is moot and has nothing to do with this thread.
