I think your taking this the wrong way, it is intended to be used in your backyard (ie permanent), most people would never think of taking a hammock hiking with them, thats why its in the tree, because its meant to be there. i have no problem with this.

I think we can all agree that the pictured item is for backyard use only...clearly not for LNT or backpacking use.

If Cannibal (or anyone else) wants to discuss the details of how it is marketed with Byer or their retail outlets...why is that a 'joke' or worthy of scorn?

Making comparisons between eye-bolts and weapons is absurd.

You are right though, the word "boycott" gets people's juices going sometimes. Last thing I want is a contentious thread on HF. I will use better word choices in the future.

Don't feel bad. Not my intent. Byer is in the market to sell hammocks and the rest of their "stuff". If they were LNT friendley, their marketing would reflect that. My 2 cents worth...........

A glossy, highly commercial utterly grotesque photograph. Its so outrageously wrong Im deemed to ask what is that brown coloured object at the edge of the picture Im that much bewildered I really cant believe my eyes.Im not familiar with this company living across the pond but after being made aware of this well I wont type what Im thinking.Such a company could be so dumb irresponsible and plainly wrong.Lets face it there are many individuals / small cottage industries in the hammock industry who practice good respectul procedures regarding the care of our great outdoors. This is shocking.I do believe this company needs reporting by as many sympathetic folk ie practicaly all hammock hangers as possible this is a bad example to set for an established company. It also puts good hammockers in a bad light wich is an outrage as Im constantly impressed by how much the vast majority of us here appreciate and respect our habitat. It means not much to me whether the tree is owned Ha! theres a laugh in someones backyard or other.A tree is a tree a living ,proud organism.

I am as LNT as the next guy but this might just be for backyard use and leaving straps on a tree for a long time probably does more harm than good.

We tap trees every year for sap. You drill as far away from last years hole that you can. Trees are fine.

I do see the point of this being in REI and some bozo might buy it thinking to use that eyebolt on camping trips.

A touching but firm letter to the REI PR department should take care of it quickly.

REI has the REI Stewardship program. I thought it an appropriate venue to send a brief email. It was non-confrontational and concise; written from a 'concerned member'.
