    should I be concerned with the fact that they materials are 2nds? How bad could they actually be?

    If you are making a tarp there is no reason to trim off the selvages. Simply stitch them into the hem/seam. Helps stabilize the fabric.
    I agree but one end of this material has over 1/2" of selvage that was not sewable. I was rolling 3/8" grosgrain in the hem so I had to trim. The other end was usable almost all the way to edge.
