for long distance hiking what type and how long of strap or rope do you use for hanging also i'm about 150lbs and thinking 2 10ft pices of static rope about 3/8 diameter

There are a number of ways you can suspend a hammock but whoopie slings are currently in fashion. You can dive into lots of reading here on the forum to figure out how to order the 7/64" Amsteel Blue and do your own splicing or just order pre-made whoopies.

Whoopie slings, used with tree hugger straps, are lightweight and easy to adjust. Much nicer than dealing with heavy 3/8" line and knots.

Gravy, the 7/64 Amsteel Blue is all you need. Very easy to splice and you should splice it as it does not hold knots well. Light and relatively inexpensive compared to other ropes that can carry the same load.

AHE carries it by the foot and Redden Marine has about the lowest prices and they give you a 5% discount if you enter "hammockforum" in the coupon box at checkout.

If you want them pre-made, the prices on my site are shipped per pair.

As for straps... AHE carries that too, or Ive had very good dealings, as have many other members, with Strapworks The Poly 1" webbing is all you need.

Amsteel sounds great i was going to use a 30ft peice of webbing that i have used a few times ansd seems to work well i'm pretty good at the nots that come out easly like over laping the loose end but this seems like it may save some weight thanks for the help

I use webbing around the tree, about 3 ft or so but never measured it... I then take a piece of wood and use a marlin spike hitch to attach it to the free end of the webbing. I then string my whoopie sling (made of amsteal that I bought from opie, see above) and I am good. It is very lightweight and I have tons of adjustablity.
