1.1oz single not too light duty?

A couple weeks ago I made my first hammock, a double layer 1.1oz ripstop. Thought that was my only option.

Today I noticed that Warbonnet sells a single layer 1.1oz Blackbird for people up to 185lbs. That's what I weigh, so I figured I'd give it a try. Took no time to make one up and have put my weight in it. Only 8.9oz with 6' whoopie slings.

    Is it really safe?

If it is, I'd like to use it on the trail. Others out there using a 1.1 single of any sort?

Nawh ... I made my ENO clone out of a double layer 1.1 Marpat ... just didn't fill comfortable with my old arse hanging in a single layer ...

I like to claim I am 215#, but with my winter lard on I am much heavier. It gets cold here in N. GA. Back in the 215# days, I tried a single 1.1oz Speer style while I was making a double 1.1.oz. The single 1.1 held me, but I think it stretched to the max. Adding the second layer reduced the amount of fabric stretch to un-noticeable. I guess it's a matter of philosophy, if you are a UL at all cost, it'll hold you. Just don't pitch above any sharp objects.
Do you cut the handles off your toothbrush, cut off your shoe laces, shave your head before a hike? If you don't mind carrying a few XTRA ounces for some security, I'd double it.

My biggest fear was not the fabric tearing for no reason, it was that all the stitching was in really thin fabric.

Logic tells me that Warbonnet wouldn't be selling a 1.1 rated to 185# unless it was capable of withstanding long term use, so I should be good.

On mine the stitching is just to finish the edges so it doesn't rely on any of that for strength. Used it last night but had a hard time sleeping. That's common for me so I don't know if it was because of the hammock or not.

I think my next project will be a 1.7oz single layer but this time I think I want to make a Hennessy style asym.

I built a 1.1oz single layer for my son (145 lbs.) using AHE's 23 gram carabiners on each end. Kinda like Grand Trunk's Nano 7.

Got it finished moments before Super Bowl kickoff & it held my 230 lbs. the whole game. Plenty comfortable, but I wouldn't take it out to sleep in. It will suit my son fine, but I would agree with Warbonnet's 185 number.

I remember 185 lbs. It was sometime around 1983.

Like others have said, the 1.1 will hold a whole lot more weight without failure, but it won't feel as nice due to the stretch. I have slept in a single layer 1.1 hammock when my weight was closer to 250.

    Weight

    Knotty,

I weigh around 200 lbs, first hammock was a BB 1.1 oz. single layer. Held me just fine.

I now use the Hyperlight HH. It is a single layer and the fabric is around the same as the BB>. Holds me jsut fine..

I experience a lot of sag and stretch, but I find that comfortable.. You being 15-20 lbs lighter, will probably have a better time at it.

I've made one out of single layer 1.1 from www.Thru-Hiker.com. So far so good. IT actually stretched less than my last homemade hammock that was made from much heavier material.

Have slept indoors in the hammock for a couple of nights now. It's comfy and big.

Based on the feedback here, it sounds like it should hold me just fine. Thanks everyone.
