This is like me and my wife, apparently she repels them and I attract them.

No matter which model you get, they all run off the same concept: Apply heat to a treated pad and it releases the repellant. I have been using thermacell for years and they do work really well.

A multi-layered defense such as Shug recommends in this video is the most effective way to avoid being eaten alive.

I have the hip belt models, and the the lantern models and really can't be out in my yard without them. My only complaint is that I only get about two summers out of them before they won't fire up anymore. The gas still comes through, the sparker still works, but no fire.

Consequently, when I was in Mexico in the late '90s, they had the same blue pads in little grates you could plug into a wall outlet. No one had window screens and they kept the Mex-squitos outside where they belonged.

I just thought I’d share a little info on the active ingredient in the two matts.
The thermacell mat contains 21.97% allethrin.
    ARS mat12 d-Allethrin 48mg/Mat (5.33%w/w)
They both release a similar amount of smoke but i’m unsure of the actual effectiveness between the two, judging from the actual size difference I’d guess the thermacell has at least four to eight times the allethrin.

This stuff is toxic to aquatic life, so dispose of responsibly.

    Good info! Thanks.

Great thread! Lots of interesting details. I have a Thermacell and it was my Astronomy friends that told me about it. They work great, but I still try to use a bug net of some kind when I sleep.

I use that OFF clip as well and it DOES reduce the amount of bugs around me! I've also had great results with Herbal Armor's DEET free bug spray.

My wife and I have been camping in a travel trailer for about 20 years and use thermocells on all our trips. I bought one for primitive camping, too but found I didn't use it much. Premetherin on the gear and 25% deet on me seems to work well. If the pads lasted 8-10 hours, I would be much more likely to put it back in my bag.
