DIY Marlin Spike

What about PVC pipe?
It would be a little wider than the aluminum, but its dirt cheap...

I'm a Special Ed. teacher and I'm thinking of making hammocks in my Social Studies class, so dirt cheap is appealing.

Also, in the marlin-spike hitch the weight is on the knot which is a big advantage.
Could you double the webbing and make a loop this way?
Where would that put the weight?

I made mine from stainless steel tubing we had at work... But it was not for the hammock it was for the tarp, I would want something stronger than that for.the hammock although I can easily hang and jump on the tube and it doesn't distort so maybe it would work...

I get my knitting needles from thrift stores. Really cheap! All sizes and colors, great for fid's etc.

Olddog gave me some knitting needles about 1/4" in diameter which he cut into about 3" lengths. They are fantastic! Hold well but slip out when you pull on them. They come in pretty colors, too
