DH Freebird ~ Had an old friend retire today

Yep, had to take it down and put it away today.

After nearly 3 years of every night use, at home, in addition to getting the call over my 11' BIAS, on any trip that called for weather, Papa Smurf's 10' X 60" 1.0 Multicam Freebird has begun to separate on the stitching for the continuous loop channels. This hammock was constructed, on my request, out of the now discontinued old 1.0 material.(before it was discontinued).

The failure appeared pretty much where anticipated, but only after being one very comfortable, extremely reliable, and lets face it, bad-@ssed 10oz hammock. It never let me down, and i mean that. Slept in it last night, checked it this morning, took it down and it never floor crashed me. My hat is off to the Smurfs. Thank you.

Good deal! And if you don’t mind, for science, are you near or well below the weight rating?

165# It was obviously a great match of size, weight, materials, and expectations. Papa got involved, like he always does, when asked, and nailed this one for me.

That was a great hammock at the time and I wish I got one at HangCon when they brought it out.

Glad to see you got around 1000 nights in it. Goes to show that if you take care of your gear, it lasts a long time.

    Yup, love me some Smurfs.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Quick question? Could you redo the ends and instead of using the channel to hold the hammock, whip the ends, thus extending the life?

Or sew it into a TQ liner or summer sheet. Or dip it in some silicone and make a ground sheet. Or make a cape or a gear hammock. Or a ridgeline organizer.

^^I’m just building on your idea that the hammock has a lot of potential beyond it’s death, which is valid. Your idea works too.

Sort of thinking about most of that. Less than 10' doesn't rock me for a hammock, but the big hunk of cool multicam, will turn up in something for sure.

Besides...I'll need something to burn the queue time on the DH waiting list. Lots of hammocks out there, but its still well worth the wait, to have a good dream.

I forgot to mention. The DH tag fell off within a week or so. The first sign of stitch stretch I guess. Papa was very concerned and wanted it back to take a look at it. Even though the fabric was discontinued right after that, I never did.

Hey Smufs.........I guess it was alright

You could DIY some sil and coat it to make an UQP or Poncho or rain Kilt. So many options with the multicam material.
