i have one of those tarps with doors. it blocked all the downpours. it was actually fun just sitting in the hammock listening to rain hitting my tarp. i had enough juice on my phone and watched a movie while waiting for rain to stop. but it was not fun going no2 in the rain tbh. no matter how secure your tarp is, i have notice it’s really easy to get muddy under your hammock or quilt. so watch out.

Enjoy the weekend everybody, and keep it hangin' high and dry!!

How can I enjoy camping/hammocking when the weather is rainy?

Enjoy reading from your hammock and eating and playing games together under a commons area tarp. Also, a nice twig burner like the Firebox stove is great in wet weather at the edge of a tarp. As others have said, enjoy your hike knowing you will get wet, but have dry clothes and footwear.

This is a picture of our trip to Horse Thief Lake in South Dakota. The commons tarp was a 12’ and the kids all used 9’ tarps seen in the background. It was raining when we arrived and set up; otherwise, I probably would have set up the tarp over the campsites picnic table. It rained a lot that week, but everyone stayed dry under the tarps even in a bit of wind. The pine needles were great since it kept the place from becoming muddy.

Whatever you do, do NOT hike the whole Tongue Mtn Range in the rain and cold. Did that back in college and it was slushy too!! What a miserable hike with no views of the lake!!! We survived though! Lol!!

Thanks everyone for your very useful tips on handling foul weather. I guess this is why they call it camping, and not resorting! It's really front country camping in a state park, so at least there will be some bail options. The weather looks doable though thanks to all of your suggestions. The unknown is how my teen daughter will like it.
https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l...+NY+12836:4:US I'll be at Rogers Rock campground from Sat-Mon. Most recent surface water temp readings were 77 F.

Not sure I will be doing much swimming in Lake George with the high temps being 75 and 78 respectively on Sun and Mon.

Bring a large umbrella. Put your tarp in porch mode if it's not too windy. Embrace the wet!

If you're inevitably going to get wet it's not so bad. But having one of those mornings with "it's going to stop any minute", only to go on for hours is just depressing. In hindsight it's better to just pack up and get on with it, but you never know for sure.

More ideas . . . have a pizza delivered or pick one up. If that isnt possible, find a way to bring your daughters favorite food.

If she has a boyfriend, invite him as a surprise. If you dont like him, pay some of the boys wandering around to "stop by" your site.

    Hee hee.

Make sure you have extra dry clothes to sleep in.

Make something extra delicious to eat! I love wrapping veggies and your choice of meat in aluminium foil and baking it in the fire - the silver turtle.

Embrace the rain in your clothes that aren't meant for sleeping in (as long as the temps are warm enough)

I also agree with the cheap large tarp. If the rain isn't blowing sideward, my family likes hanging out and relaxing under one. Books, books, books. Everyone loves reading, so we stock up before leaving the house and relax with books.
