What temp do you start needing an underpad?

How cool does it have to get at night before you have to add an underpad? I have a stealth quilt, and plan to sleep in silkweight capilene or step it up to cocoon pants/pullover when it gets cooler. Right now our overnight lows are in the high 60's/low 70's, and that sounds like a great temp for almost just my boxers. I'm in a HH Hyperlite. Thanks!

I would bet you need something on the bottom now. 60's for sure.

yeah, it might surprise you how soon you'd be wanting something below you, either a mat/pad inside the hammock or an underquilt on the out side.
but there are a lot of variables from person to person, & time to time.
now would be a good time to test to see what works for you, but you may want to at least have a ccf pad as a back up if needed. ...tim

At those temps, the wind is the big thing...so one night you might be toasty, and the next night with a 5-10mph wind you'll get the shivers. Adding the Stealth will add several degrees if you just hang it loosely so it acts as a windblock, then snug it up as the temp drops even further.

But you're asking about an underpad...do you mean in addition to the Stealth?

Jacks r Better used to sell a weathershield that would go under your hammock to protect your underquilt from rain/splash-up. It works well by itself in temps down to around 60. I have one and it works great. They currently dont sell this item anymore due to some supplier issue, but was told by them that they plan on bringing it back.

I was planning to use the Stealth as a quilt on top. I just got a Gossamer Gear 3/8" wide pad, but from what I've read here it looks like it's far more comfortable (sweat thing) if I can avoid having to use it. I was trying to figure out how low the temps can be before I'll need it. I also got the Super System, but my guess is that it would be too hot in the 60's, but since I haven't tried it out I really don't have a clue.

Honestly the best thing to do is set up in your backyard or some place where you have an easy bailout option and see what works for you. My first night in a hammock was -2C (25F) with -7C sleeping bag and I woke up cold. The next night the temperature was the same so i added an underinflated thermarest and was toasty warm. The next weekend was around +5 and I found that my sleeping bag with a fleece blanket underneath was plenty warm for me. The key words in that sentence are "for me". You may find that adding the SuperShelter undercover with no insulation keeps you comfortable.

I didn't opt for the SuperShelter when I purchased because I knew summer was coming and figured I'd spend the time learning what works for me using stuff I have around the house. I'm probably going to get the JRB 3 season or maybe a Potomac when fall rolls around. By then the Canadian dollar should be trading at par

I've never had sweat issues with pads. Some do and some dont. Experiment and see what works.

A Tyvek under cover will do about the same thing as the JRB weather shield.

I find I need a pad or some other bottom insulation around 60-65*, and that with me sleeping in boxers only. I normally keep a pad handy or install an underquilt and vent it before I lay down for the night. That way if I get cold I can grab the pad or snug the quilt up.
