I thought the consensus was that retractable poles aren't strong enough.
It's been done. There's a thread here somewhere. Net result - You get to buy new poles. Great pics on the tread though. (look under destructive testing)LOL

I've been down this road. You can use ski poles. Two on each end are very secure, one on each end is for the brave of heart/narrow of butt. For going on an airplane, A single folding aluminum crutch for each end works.
After going round and round on this issue I came to the conclusion that FOR ME the best option is to carry a folding pruning saw. I carry one anyway. With this tool I can easily cut whatever fallen branches necessary for making a pair of bipods. The Fiskers model weighs about 3 oz.
The other obstacle that you will encounter is what to anchor the supports to. My $.02: don't bother with stakes and such. XexorZ has done some very cool research on anchors for this type of application, and you could go down that road. If there is a rock or other sturdy feature to anchor to, great! If not, well, that's why I prefer pads for bottom insulation. It makes going to ground a lot less painful.

Seriously, tho. If you are going to use trekking poles a very light hollow carbon fiber is not a real good idea for that. The Lightreks will support your weight when you need them to, but occasionally keeping you from falling down and supporting a hammock with you in it are two different things - the lines of force with a hammock go in different directions. Carbon fiber will take a lot if you apply weight from the top down, but will snap if you step on them with much force.

errrr, this sounds like a job for Texas A&M big brain club.. humm. But serious there must be a solution that is not to painfull. Silly MD State Parks Danger Ranger put me on the PAD for even suggesting a traditional Hang off trees. Lets work on it and if so I sure would like to be inside the loop.
