    Materials for making whoopie slings

I am interested in moving from my descending rings and garda hitch suspension to a whoopie sling, I just have a couple of questions.

Note: I have read Slowbro's whoopie sling post and watched Professor Hammock's video on hammock suspension.

    1. I've read that amsteel is slippery, is it still okay to use for a whoopie sling?
    - If so, then I intend to use either 7/64" or 1/8" amsteel line. Would either size be better for providing more "grab" and less slippage, or would they perform identically?

    2. When making the fixed eye at one end to attach to my hammock, what type of thread (for strength) should I be using to sew the bury and the constrictor together?

Amsteel is by far the most common cordage used on this forum for whoopie slings. It splices well and adjusts nicely. Both 7/64" and 1/8" perform identically concerning slippage, and neither is a problem for whoopie slings. The strength is determined by the diameter of the cord and the length of the bury.

The stitching on the fixed eye is only for keeping the eye bury from 'backing out' when it is not under tension. Almost any thread that won't decay should work fine. The constriction of the bury itself is what bears the weight, not the stitches.

Good spots to start, both are as good of information as you can get on the subject

    1. I've read that amsteel is slippery, is it still okay to use for a whoopie sling?
    - If so, then I intend to use either 7/64" or 1/8" amsteel line. Would either size be better for providing more "grab" and less slippage, or would they perform identically?
Yes it is slippery, and that can cause problems for many knots, but amsteel works perfect for whoopie slings and dose not slip at all in this sort of application. The more load on the sling the greater the constriction and the more it holds. Either size will work fine for most folks, I like the 1/8 as it is a bit beefier but there are lots of folks using 7/64"

    2. When making the fixed eye at one end to attach to my hammock, what type of thread (for strength) should I be using to sew the bury and the constrictor together?
I think one of the best options is to use a strand of the amsteel itself. I cut off an extra bit and pluck out one of the strands and use it to stitch the fixed eyes, it's strong, and uses some of the same materials you will have on hand. It matches color wise so if you take your time and weave it in neatly you will not hardly be able to tell it's there also.

    Good Luck

Paul knows his stuff... If you don't want to make them yourself (I spliced my own chain links, and it was interesting, but time consuming), they're still inexpensive.

BTW: Paul (arrowhead equipment) has good prices on amsteel, a variety of colors and ships wicked-fast. (takes paypal too) I buy everything I can from him...

Interestingly enough, I had already found arrowhead... and had bookmarked it to buy a few things there, including the 7/64" amsteel, before posting this thread.

Ditto. When I have piece to short to do anything with, I usually strip it for this purpose.

If your choose to use thread, anything will work because as mentioned, it is there to keep the splice from backing out when unloaded...but, think in terms of twine instead of thread. If you go with thread, go big like V92 or so. I often use #4 or #8 whipping twine if I don't feel like "wasting" a couple feet of spectra.
