There is no other way to truly enjoy backpacking in the mountains except by staying in a hammock. Sleeping on the ground or on hard wood floors has never been a joy to me. I solo backpack and the hammock allows me to stay the night just about anywhere along the trail. Hiking on the AT is a real joy to see Gods creation first hand. Psalm 72:3 "The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness."
