    Seeking Advice on UQ Options

    Hey, guys and gals

So I am looking to complete my first hammock set up. The only thing I have yet to order is the underquilt. I know from experience previously that I am perfectly fine with a 3/4 length underquilt. Additionally, the lowest temperature I'll ever be in is 25*F. I am a warm sleeper. That background being given--here are the options I had in mind.

    1. Buy Once, Cry Once--Wilderness Logics 3/4 Length 15* UQ. Currently on sale for $176. 16 oz with stuff sack. Pros: This would, in theory, be the only UQ I'd ever have to buy. As warm as I could ever need it to be, and a super attractive weight. Concerns: Even though it is a great price for what you're getting, this is much more expensive than what I was hoping for. Also, unsure of whether or not this would get too hot during warmer trips with night time lows as high as 75*.
    2. Compromise V1--Hammock Gear Econ 40* Pheonix. $90, and only 13.5 oz. Lightweight and great for most of my trips. Could, in theory, supplement with pad as needed for colder trips. Pros: Price and weight. Cons: Might want a warmer quilt down the road.
    3. Compromise V2--Wilderness Logics Budget Summer UQ. $100 and 12 oz with stuff sack. Also 40* rated, but a little shorter than the Hammock Gear version. Pros: Weight. Cons: Might be more difficult to supplement warmth on colder trips due to shorter length.
    4. Budget Option--Costco Down Quilt Modded to UQ. About $30 and less than a pound after modifications. Pros: Price. Cons: Only rated to about 50*F, and pain in the butt to modify.

Thoughts? Or other suggestions I am not considering?

If your going to 25º I would recommend getting a 20º for a bit of buffer.
You can always vent a UQ and most UQs don't make you TOO hot like a top quilt will.

I personally don't use 3/4 UQs below 30* F - my feet get too cold (even with the pad in the footbox). Since I'm a proponent of the 10* buffer rule (make sure your quilt is rated 10* below the expected low), I would use a 20* 3/4 UQ in 30* F weather.

So for me, a 15* F 3/4 UQ is about 5* more down than I need. If you really expect to spend much time below 20* F, I'd consider a full-length.

Get a 20 degree for sure. Another great budget option is the wilderness logics 3/4 budget winter UQ. These are rated for 20 degrees, weigh 20 ounces, and are $120! Same fabric as his premium quilts! There are a few other options as well!

If you want to camp at 25° then get a 20° UQ. Anything else and you will be kicking your cold derriere. Pony up & cry once, then smile in your warm fuzzy quilt.

How many nights at 20 and how many at 60? Backpacking or car camping? I’m not packing a 20 around all year for 5 nights in 25 degrees and 30 nights in 50s and 60s.

I may have when I was 30 or 40 yrs old though)

I would vote for the 20° Phoenix Econ . I have the 40° one and I think it is awesome. I agree with what the others said, if you only have UQ then definitely get the 20° model.

As general advice, I'd echo the sentiment that a 20 degree quilt is what you want, not a 40 plus a pad. You can use the 20 up into the low 70s by venting it or leaving it extra loose. If you haven't made up your mind, and you like 3/4 length, consider also the AHE Jarbidge. It's synthetic, not down, if that makes a difference. Mine weighs about 20 ounces in its stuff sack and has kept me warm down into the low 20s. Highest temp I've used it is about 70-72. The price is good too.

I went w/ the HG Econ 20* Phoenix and love it. Even in Alabama. When it’s warm, I use it on the bottom and just use my sea to summit liner in the hammock, no top quilt, and it’s perfect. The price is right, the weight is fine. And when it does get cold, which I hope it will, eventually, i’ll be ready.
