Last night I hung (My back yard) from Marlin Spikes made from sticks that had been on the ground least 2 years, I know cause I cut them then. One was about 1/2 inch thick, the other about 2/5 inch, they both held fine all night, & were tossed back on the ground for "storage".
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
Just made a pair each of aluminum and carbon fiber from old crossbow bolts. Weighed before cutting and the aluminum was lighter. Have not used yet maybe in a few days.
Theres nothing like danglin in dixie!!!!

Captain Safety here. I don't want to tell anyone what they should do or start a heated debate, but before you cut an arrow shaft, it's a good idea to know its composition and what level of respiratory protection you need. Some shafts these days are being reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Not all carbon fibers are nanofibers with the dimensions of concern, but it's worth being careful. The jury is still out on how dangerous this stuff is, and I hope it can be shown to be safe because it's awesome stuff. Anyway, knowing is half the battle:

.. truly to enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. - Herman Melville
Well I did some playing around in my backyard this weekend. I cut me two 3" lengths of the aluminum arrow shafts I had and used some mule tape(as tree straps) that Fin had given me. I set up my SBPro using the marlin spike hitch with the arrows as my toggles and all worked well.

Toggles used that have held me up (so far). Organic: ~1/2" diameter bamboo. Synthetic: ~1/2" diameter x 6" length of salvaged carbon fiber shaft from X/C ski pole.

+1 for sticks on the ground. They work fine, they're free and you don't have to remember/carry them. Whats not to love!
Wandering around the house last night the thought hit me, what about old Bic pens

So I dug one up, cut it in half, punched a hole in it and made a toggle. I don't think I would hang from it as it is now but for a tarp or ridge line toggle I think it would work pretty well. About $2 fro 24 toggles (or free if you visit the bank or doctors office )
