i use pieces of bamboo, works great for me ;-)
I have been using arrow shaft cutoffs for some time. But do not pack them with your hammock or tarp, even after smoothing the ends they may damage the fabric.
They are very easy to remove even after hanging on.
Just remember the line is to go over the knot not against the toggle
Well my limited experience with them. My pal Ken uses a stick ... techinical term being Stob ... and on the blue whoopie I made using the tool Ken made for me (if you haven't figured it out Ken is a gem) and the stob works great! As long as the wood is not punky like JerryW mentioned above ... there's really no pressure on the stick itself in such a way that it's likely to snap. Rig it like Shug directly on the knot and the thing will hold extremely well. I like Jerry's technique for just snapping the stick when you're done and you're untied.
It surely is unnerving the first time you plop your arse in a hammock with that little skinny blue line!

Hawk, you and Ken just don't understand the fun to be had in overthinking a simple problem.

I have a couple aluminum arrow shaft pieces that I use. No problems yet (knock on wood).

I am about 250# and I used a pair of these last night Micro D Carabiner (Black) - Pair (actually I used orange ones but they are sold out). They are just big enough to work with my one inch webbing.
They look cool, weigh almost nothing, were easy to take out, and I love being able to clip them on whatever for storage so they don't get lost.
