what is safe to use for toggles

Ok I know some having been using wood and aluminuum tent stakes for toggles. I would like to know what materials would be safe to use as a toggle for a marlin spike hitch.
I have a couple of aluminum arrow shafts that I had used as a spreader bar on my SBPro netting and was wondering if these would work for a toggle in this application.

couldent in theory any thing work, why carry marlin spikes, it was mentioned in the other thread that it is just easier to tie a knot around, is that the case? Does any actual weight rest on the spike it self? From the look of Shug's video the Woopie Sling rests on the knot. And lastly, isent their a knot that you could use to attach the woopie sling directly to the tree straps and avoid the use of the spike all together?

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I just use sticks that I find at the site, too. I look for about a thumb size stick and break off a 5 or 6" piece for each end. Even the real dry, snappy stuff is plenty strong since the knot is taking most of the strain.

The next morning, just break the stick right at the knot and it all comes apart easy.

The value of the marlin spike hitch is that it is easy to remove (pull the spike out, and the knott slips right out). You could tie other knotts in the line and have them hold but they would be brutal to remove after having supported my tremendous girth.

As for what is good, you just need to make sure that it does not collapse under the pressure of the knott, there is a rumor that some slurpee straws work but the smallest thing I have used successfully without falling on my butt is a bamboo skewer.

I purchased a crossbow arrow from the local outdoor store. Cut it into five in lengths and used those. Cost was around $3.

If you can find an archery store, ask them for left over cuts from custom arrows. Free is great!
