I use the girth knot or the marlin knot interchangeably, sometimes one at each end. I see no difference on my stick used as a spike.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.

    They are totally different knots:

    Here is the girth hitch

    and the Marlin Spike hitch

If you cannot tell the difference in the 2 knots that you tied, then you are tying one or both wrong.

Yep, dem am duh nots what me be tyining.

AND, I AM TYING THEM CORRECTLY!!!! Have been using them for other than hanging a hammock for over 50 years!!!! Can do so IN MY SLEEP!!! For this use, THERE IS NEARLY NO DIFFERENCE! AND, AS I STATED, THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE IN IT'S EFFECT ON THE STICKS I USED AS MARLIN SPIKES.

you gotta love our mother tongue. When I read

I read as you evidently meant it. But then TiredFeet saw that the location of the lack of difference in your knots was your stick, not that the effect of the knots were identical upon your stick, and I said to myself, "Self, it works that way too."

now fellas, just kiss and make up OK

I'm with you. I have been tying those knots for as long as I can remember. I didn't know there was a name for them.
