    JRB Nest used with?

What do folks use with their Nest? Mine just arrived and I'm curious if I need or should use anything with it like a pad or heat shield or just the solo Nest?

Hope you like that Nest. I love mine. It is one versatile piece of gear.
What you use or dont use with it will depend on the tempearature.
Alone it seems to go to around 35 degrees for most on average.
In really cold weather, I'll use mine as a top quilt and go with pads.
I then have easy access to using the Nest ala Clint Eastwood style.

The JRB bottom weathershield is an excellent accessory to the Nest. It gives you a few more degrees, is breathable and really versatile. In colder weather (below temps listed in above posts), I have been experimenting with stuffing various means of insulation between the nest and the weathershield. Have tried partially inflated garbage bags, dry leaves, 1 1/2 batt of R-22 home insulation inside a garbage bag. Heat sealed closed with an iron. Mixed results on everything. I created some condensation issues, got my nest pretty dirty, and compressed the down making the nest less effective on a few occasions.
But it is fun to keep trying stuff.

The weathershield by itself, is a safe bet, and good wet weather insurance.

I have one. It is really good alone around this time of year in the Mountains. With a pad on standby. JRB currently does not sell this item. Something about a supplier issue they told me. You can always try to make one yourself.

Microporus Polypropylene like the stuff Frogg Toggs rain gear is made of.

The Nest is a great piece of gear. Most people can get around 30-35* with the nest. Below that add a pad like one of those cheap blue Walmart camping pads or a Gossamer Gear Thinlight pad (most people use the wide/long 1/4" pad).

isn't that the same stuff as the Neat Sheet material which I just bought thinking I'd make an SPE with it ...sounds like it might work for the weather shield as well?

On the pad I'm gonna try gluing the WM blue CCF pads together edge to edge for a wider width using some 'Amazing Goop' glue. I hear it works good for this? Will let you know?

Another option in the winter is the double underquilt method. Dont believe I've heard anyone use this approach other than the Jacks. I tried it with my Nest and No Sniveller once on the patio hanging. Temps were around 16 degrees. I was still a little cold underneath. Not sure I had it tensioned correctly.

Be interesting to see how 1-3 of these 1/8 pads would work between a underquilt and a weathershield and how far it could extend the temp range: http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/...68.209.169.187

...off to do some hanging w/goats

    Thanks for the info guys!

I'm heading up to cooler climes near Telluride, Colorado above 10,000' for 5-days attending Goatstock 2007 and temps have been in the 30Fs for the lows! Taking my Hyperlight + Nest of course, truck-sized windshield solar screen, some WM blue CCF and a garage sale CCF/OCF combo pad to play with and see what keeps me warm. I'm also bringing several down bags +20 Marmont and +35 WM (not Walmart). The goats are on their own!

Should be a fun time! I don't think anyone in our goat group has seen or used hammocks before so I'm sure I'll get tons of curious questions! I love being an 'early adopter' of technology! Wow! I wonder how long hammock's have been around? Hmm ...so what's the history on the hammock? (yet another thread?)

Now for the best part of my hammock journey ...the actual field test!

I'll be sure to let you all know my results. GM
