Looks worth going to ground for. Stories to tell the grand-kids for sure!

LB, I envy you. One of my dream trips. Which route did you take up? Wondering how the glaciers/snowfields are holding up? Did your bring a hammock and try any hanging when below the treeline?

We took the Rongai Route, but detoured to Mawenzi Tarn for 2 days. Coming down we took the Marangu Route.

The glaciers are holding up well from what I could tell. They were larger than life and glorious. Of course I'd never seen them before, so they could look terrible comparable to 10 years ago. As for snow we had a fresh 6" of snow right before we made our summit ascent so EVERYTHING was covered. Personally I think it looks better with snow. It gives it much more of an epic feel.

Didn't take a hammock, and even if I had I wouldn't have been able to hang it anywhere. We were only below the tree line for one night, and all of the hammocking trees I saw were pretty far off the path, and I'm not sure the indigenous wildlife would have enjoyed my company, or perhaps they'd have enjoyed it too much.

    LyttleBryan,
Those pictures are great, I'm surprised by the amount of snow. I thought it was all retreating.

It's a trip i'd like to make one day too. My friend, Squash Falconer has just got back from Kilimanjar as part of the Wings Over Kilimanjaro charity expedition to try to launch 100 paraglider pilots from the summit and she took one of our hammocks with her...

She didn't sleep in it though, just used it a a lounger while they waited at 4,000m for some supplies. Possibly the highest ever use of a hammock though

For anyone that's interested, here are some more photos of our portable hammock stand on Kilimanjaro

Awesome pictures, the raw beauty of that landscape and the humbling one must feel being around animals like that must have been exhilarating.

    Thanks for posting.

7 Days on the Ground - Mt. Kilimanjaro

Great trip report! 4 guys I work with just returned this week from Kili. One was only the 4th person with Cerebral Palsey to summit the mountain. They did the climb to raise funds and awareness for CP and the local CP organization.

Their pics, story, television interviews, etc can be viewed at:

Maybe you ran into them there?
