Here's a great discussion. The OP talks about going from whoopies back to buckles, and the conversation goes on from there with support for/against both.
Done with Whoopies
Cinch buckles are a bit easier made of durable materials and can be cinched right up to the hammock. Great for car camping.
As a backpacker, I use whoopies made with Dynaglide and Kevlar straps. This lightweight system has supported my 200 pounds for several years. And is unnoticeable in weight & volume in my pack.
A small continuous loop on the ends of your hammock even allow you to connect to tightly spaced trees, skipping the whoopie.

I have different setups for different purposes. I have a sub 2 ounce dynaglide whoopie sling suspension that I use with Kevlar tree straps. I combine this with a very lightweight SLD Streamliner hammock as part of my ultralight kit.
All my other hammocks all have cinch buckles though.

Between those two, I prefer cinch buckles. They're just easier to use, and you don't have to worry as much about tree spacing. My personal favorite, however, is a simple becket hitch tied directly to the CLs of my hammock.
Thanks for sharing that previous thread on the subject! Good info in there.

the best part is there really isn't a wrong answer
both are just fine
For how easy they are I chose the cinch buckles. Dutch makes some good ones that I am enjoying.
As a newbie I got stuck in the endless debate pros/cons of various methods. In the end, I bought both.... Dutch Beetle (or some other bug) buckles and a 12' strap and bought some 7/64" Amsteel to make some Whoopie.
