    pegs

I left for a trip last weekend and forgot my regular tarp pegs. I stopped at Home Depot on the way looking for the long nails I've heard that some people use. I think they're called gutter nails. What I ended up with were 10" long galvanized (steel I assume) spikes. They were heavy as heck, but cheap and did the job. I have a feeling that the "spikes" I used were not what people mean when they talk of using "nails". Does anybody use these things and, if so, what are they called?

The main reason I ask is I'm sure to forget my pegs again sooner or later.

I just store mine in a separate bag with my rain tarp and they're always there.

There are stakes all over the woods, they're called sticks. I lost my stakes during my last hike (I think they fell out of the mesh pocket) on the first day out. I used sticks the rest of the time with zero problems and a few ounces less weight. Of course I had nice soft ground to use, probably wouldn't work so great in rocky soil.

The nails you used are the spikes used for "railroad tie" construction. Much much heavier.

I always have mine there, too. The one time I forget to check, my kids have been into my stuff and left them who knows where. Unless I chain them to my wrist, it'll happen again sooner or later.

Thanks to all who replied with the proper name of these nails. I wonder: does aluminum gutter nails mean that the nails are aluminum, or that they're used to install aluminum gutters?

Both. They are aluminum, and are used on aluminum gutters.

one more note... the ones i picked up at lowes to try out, had rough sides (to help keep it from working back out of the gutter no doubt) and i would be extra careful not to slide the guy line on those.
i'm sure they would work a lot like a saw on the guy lines.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Good point, I didn't think of that. I have some that I bent a hook into the end so that I can run an extension cord to the shrubs for Christmas lights. I just push them into the ground with the extension cord in the hook The grandkids kept tripping on them. BTW I'm in Florida = no snow
