    Why D Rings?

What's the deal? They just look like an unnecessary piece of hardware, to me.

What does a D ring do that a loop of webbing won't do?

Ditto. I usually sew on a flat piece of heavy webbing (1.5" x 1.5" for instance) and use a soldering iron to poke a hole in it: instant grommet. A loop of smaller webbing would work just as well, and might be lighter.

I imagine if you want to larkshead to it wearing gloves the D-Ring is easier because it's always open you dont have to fiddle with the loop you want to pass your cord through.
It's probably also easier to detach the tieout because the webbing doesnt bunch up under the guyline.Same goes for using flag hooks or glove hooks i guess.

That said i havent had a problem without them yet..
Cant think of anything else atm

I think a D-ring withstands abrasion better so it should presumably last longer. Also has less friction if you need to do something like a trucker's hitch. That said, though, I use paracord loops instead of webbing or D-rings. I can always lark's head a ring to the loop if necessary.

I don't get enough movement on my lines to my loops to show any abrasion in a year that I worry about it. I always check them at the end of a trip ... if I had any it'd be a simple thing to replace them ... I aggree with Dave ... kind of useless extra piece of hardware for me to add to my tarps. FOR ME ... no D rings.

I don't think they're necessary but I do like the ones on my MacCat. I change out my tarp lines all the time and it makes that easier, and as mentioned I use a truckers hitch almost all the time...that's MUCH easier with the D-rings and significantly cuts down on abrasion. When I use a truckers hitch on the JRB with nylon loops, I have to run the working end thru the line rather than the nylon...only takes a few more seconds, so not a huge deal. But I do like the D-rings.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, but also don't want to starta new thread for a similar question.

On webbing tie out loops, JRB puts a twist in the webbing. I have seen other vendors do the same. Also I think strapworks will put such a twist in the loops on huggers.

I think the twist is supposed to make inserting line through the loop easier.

I find the twist makes it much more difficult to do just that.

What do others think of the twist?

    1. Easier,
    2. more dificult, or
    3. no difference

Just wondering. I figure vendors put the twist there for a reason other than to have me swear at it.

I have one tarp with D-rings and 1 with webbing. I like D rings better because it bothers me when the guy lines cinch down and the webbing is bunched together causing it to crease. I also don't like tying knots with my suspension webbing, and I try to tie my half hitches around the buckles so that it doesn't creasle the webbing. I'm sure this doesn't reduce the strength or anything, it just bothers me. D-rings are much cleaner, but that's a personal preference.
