    Hello from Alabama

I'm Jeremy from northeast Alabama. I've been doing a little hikingwhen I get time. I've been using a tent so far and sleep good but I'm going to get a hammock and try it out. Hopefully get my setup soon and get it dialed in. I'm hoping to do another section of the AT this spring. I did 30 miles in Georgia this past April.

Welcome to the forums from another Georgia guy. If you're in northeast Alabama, you've got some great spots to go to. One of my favorites is the Sipsey Wilderness. If you've not been there yet, definitely go. In fact, this is the perfect time. And if you like the AT, perhaps we'll run into each other there some day. It's becoming one of my obsessions as well.

If you're still thinking about what to get hammock-wise, make one of your first purchases Derek Hansen's book "The Ultimate Hang." Reading that will save you time and money in the long run.

My disclaimer: I don't personally know Derek and have no relationship, financial or otherwise with the man. I just like the book and recommend it highly.

Those are all good recommendations. Pinhoti trail is near you too and runs through my neck of the woods as well

Welcome from right up the road in Nashville. You certainly are in a great locale for backpacking. We often hike down in your direction, if you might want to check the link in my signature line below for trips from time to time for trips.

The Savage Gulf isn't too far from you. Lots of National Forest trails in the TN/GA/NC/AL area too. On the TN/AL border is the Walls of Jericho, you might be familiar with.

Anyway, feel free to speak up if you have questions about hammocking, of course, but also places to hike and hang.

In addition to "The Ultimate Hang" book, if you haven't already done so you should check out Shug's YouTube channel:

Yep, you are probably not far from Sipsey, a great place to hike and camp. ( You are east of it, I am about 90 minutes west)

Hey HG, you might not be old enough to remember it, but I graduated from Berry HS outside of Rome in 1967, a school opened in 1902 and closed( the HS anyway) in 1984. I still go back and visit that area now and then, nice area with good memories.

Actually, I’m originally from Oxford, AL, but one of the Assistant Scoutmasters in my oldest son’s troop is a Berry HS alum. I was born in 1979 though, so no, I don’t remember much from 1984
