Vote on a Date for Dolly Sods Hang/Backpacking Trip

We’re voting on what weekend to hang at Dolly Sods, WV toward the end of summer. Please vote for one or all that work for you. The weekend with the most votes wins. Labor Day Weekend will be crowded but it also gives us extra time. It has its pros and cons. If you don’t like that weekend, just don’t vote for it. Please don’t vote if you know there's no way you will make any of the weekends regardless. The poll will be open for voting for one month. Voting will end 4/5/10. The poll shows your name and what weekends you pick.

As for the backpacking routes, what I’m thinking based on the feedback from the previous DS thread is that we will decide on a Friday night meet-up campsite and a Saturday night meet-up campsite, which we will mark on a map and post to the Hang thread. How and when you get to the campsite is up to you. Of course the Friday night campsite will be a much shorter distance in for the late arrivals.

For Saturday night, I figure different people can post their backpacking plans on HF and how far they plan to hike. So people can group up for the distance they want to backpack on Saturday to the camp site. I’m thinking the shortest distance may be about 4 miles and then other hikes can be 8 or 10 miles or longer depending on the routes. The short trip is for people who want to camp with their kids or simply aren’t interested in longer hike. The longer distances are for people who want to wear themselves out and really test their hiking shoes, gear, and pack weights . . . knees.

(If Labor Day Weekend wins we'll discuss a strategy for that since some may come Friday, others Saturday.)

Anyway that’s what I’m thinking. Anything is up for discussion but remember to vote! Repeat: Vote for one or more. The poll shows your name and what dates you pick.

I will make myself available for whichever weekend others choose. The only reason I didn't vote for Aug. 27-29 is my wife's birthday, but she'd probably say go ahead if that's selected. I hope to combine this HF hang with a solo trip in the area - perhaps Roaring Plains or Laurel Fork. Any recommended trails for either?

SkyDog and I are also "open" to whatever dates are chosen. Dolly Sods is our fav area on the East Coast!

For those who haven't been up there: There is ONE campground. SkyDog and I will volunteer to get there early and secure one of only 10 sites. Plenty of trees close in to the C.G. There's a big P-Lot close by. All other camping is to be 100 yards off the road. The water at the C.G. is safe; but, just plain awful; bring your own or gag. There are 2 very nice privies.

One other thing: I don't care what the forecast is, it can change up there in the blink of an eye. Even if it sez rain, it can be GORGEOUS!

I never drink water. I'm afraid it will become habit-forming.

September should be a great time frame for this. There's typically less chance of rain on any given weekend in the fall and August can get hot even on the sods. I can't wait no matter what weekend it's on.

There are different circuit hikes you can do to get the same place. Few miles in on Friday. Saturday will be different groups doing different mileage to get to the same campsite. Last year RockRat and I did a 9 mile hike on Sat with lots of stopping, pictures taking, exploration, GPS playing. We started around 8 in the morning and got to campsite around 3-ish I think. Gave us plenty of time to pick a site, setup, and then enjoy the evening with JD (who came in by a different route) and eat. On Sunday, just a few miles out so a leisurely morning and time to drive home. Great weekend. Weather was gray during day but perfect in the evening.

I see me doing something similar again. I will post the trip I plan before the hike so people can decide if they want to join me or do a different hike.

I would like to make a side trip down the Huckleberry trail from Spruce Knob Observation tower to the Seneca Creek. I know of a great swimming hole with 25" jump off from the rocks above. That's not too far from Dolly Sods...although I know of a nice swimming hole in the Red creek there too.
