    bb zipper nightmare

so i slept in my bb last night and when i got up to water the plants the last time and zipped myself back up i caught my yeti in my in the zip without knowing. this morning when i got up i couldnt pull down the zipper. while laying in the hammock i was trying to get the fabric out of the zipper as easy as i could and i seperated the pull from one side. i took apart the whipping to try and pull the zipper all the way back to reset it. then i saw that on the bb there is a small channel loop sewn through the zipper at the very end. so i tried to ever so slightly pry the pull apart and reset the zipper. i got it back in but when i was lightly pinching it back down i broke the pull apart. so now one of my favorite posessions is broken. i guess that the only way for it to be fixed is for me to seam rip the stitches through the zipper, take it completely apart and try to find a new pull and put it on from the end. has this happened to any one else? any thoughts?

On my first outing with my winter Nunatak quilt I got it badly stuck in the BB zipper. I didn't want to damage the quilt so was gently trying to get it out. I'd planned on leaving it that way until I got home the next day, but decided to try one hard pull. It released, and after sweating the resulting possible damage to the quilt (on a 19* morning), found it to be OK. My zipper expert and repair person is away at the moment, but I'll ask her for suggestions when she returns Monday.

As much as I loathe velcro, I gotta say, it doesn't eat fabric.

This brings up memories of threads from a few months ago discussing the pros and cons of velcro vs zippers. I guess your experience chalks one up for the velcro advocates. There are those that say that if you have a zipper, be prepared for it to fail (Ed Speer- SnugFit & PeaPod). (I remember the button-front britches from my Navy days-a man overboard can't afford a stuck zipper!) Sorry you had the trouble, but this should help all of us to remember to keep a knife inside the hammock.

If I'm picturing this right, you should be able to buy a few zipper pulls, pry them open and use pliers to squeeze one back on. I'd get a few in case the first one or two break...but I've repaired zippers this way and it will be much easier than seam-ripping and re-sewing. Unless I'm not understanding what happened.

I got my top layer of my double layer BB caught 1x. I was in the hammock at the time so I had to get it out. I worked the zipper until I got it out. I would say that I am very careful with my BB zipper now.

You can't just put any zipper pull on it. There sould be a # on it like 2 or 5. And then see if there is a mfr on it like YKK. I have replace 2 pulls and one worked out the other I had to replace the zipper. For some reason coworkers come to me when they can't keep their zipper closed. It's never a good thing, trust me.

i've had zippers get caught in 1.1 fabric on many occasions, and never has it torn the fabric, 1.1 is extremely tough stuff.

has anyone ever had 1.1 torn from a zipper? (just curious)

send it back to me for a fix if you'd like.

out of all the hammocks i've made, this is only the second time i've ever had a customer with a zipper issue. that's a fraction of a %. i'd say most issues with zippers can be avoided by just being more careful with the zipper. you do have to be a little more careful with a zipper, but their benefits outweigh their fall backs.
