Dead eye instead of "Handle" on Whoopie Sling

This may have already been done by those more advanced in Whoopie sling technology but I haven't seen it so just thought I'd share the idea.

I was working on some whoopie slings yesterday and when I got to the very end where I would normally have made the "handle" on the end of the adjustable slide it hit me to put a dead eye there instead. I don't know what all the possibilities are for doing this but it seems that I've lost nothing and gained some potential functionality.

I am new to splicing and just made my very own whoopie slings, but what exactly is a dead eye?? Is that what Slowbro calls a backsplice in his post http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=9349

You are correct. I never looked at the larger photo to notice.

The Dead eye is the fixed loop at the top left of this photo from opies site (this sling is a 3" long key holder but the components are the same)

The back splice is the "handle" on the lower left. I replaced the backsplice with another dead eye loop giving you essentially 3 loops. 2 fixed and one adjustable.

Now just don't do like I did the other night and rig your hammock up with the wrong dead eye! All of sudden you'll have the whoopee from heck and it'll probably not hold you if you put any weight on it!! Good thing about whoopee slings ... real easy to remove and re-install when you have a brain fart like that!

I use a backsplice. I think Paul does a small loop.

IMO its just more time added to make the sling. I dont see a viable use of having a fixed eye in the tail. Generally you arent making adjustments to the sling with one hand on the bury and the other at the end of the tail.

It didn't even occur to me that the size was so small. I hope I didn't give anyone the wrong impression of your slings. It was a handy visual aid is all.

So far the only thing I've been able to come up with is to hook the loop over a prussic and toggle on the Ridge line to have a another place to hang something from. What sparked the thought though was I had so much line hanging down that I could almost run it the length of the hammock so it could have acted as a ridge line (don't worry, I know that would not have been a good thing ) It just made me realize how much cord was not being used in that case and what could I do with it.....if it only had a loop on the end
